Managing Device Types Groups and Device Types Estimated Reading Time: 2 Minutes Device type groups organize device types (for example, the Network group contains Generic Switch, Cisco 2948G, and similar types). Manage both from Settings > Device Types. Editing a Device Type Group Go to Settings > Device Types. Click edit next to the group. On the Details tab, edit the group's name. If more than one language is installed, a name field appears for each language. On the Custom Fields tab, set each custom field to Yes, Required, or No for device types in this group. Click Update. Editing a Device Type Go to Settings > Device Types. Click edit next to the device type. On the Details tab, edit the type name(s), its Device Type Group, Connection Node Type, and the Client Visible and Block Device Deletion if Connected toggles. On the Physical Info tab, set whether the type is rackable (and its rack units) or set a height/width/depth, and upload front/back images. If the type already has devices, you can check Apply these dimensions to all N existing devices of this device type or the equivalent images checkbox to push the change to every existing device of this type. On the Interface Sets tab, click Add set to define a group of interfaces (number of interfaces, type, name pattern, and whether they're private or excluded from automated management) that new devices of this type get automatically. On the Custom Fields tab, set each custom field to Yes, Required, No, or Default (inherit the group's setting) for this specific device type. Click Update. Deleting a Device Type Group or Device Type Go to Settings > Device Types. Click delete next to the group or device type. Warning: If any devices still use that device type (or any type in that group), Ubersmith does not delete it immediately. Instead it opens a Remove Device Type page listing every affected device and a New Device Type dropdown for each one. You must choose a replacement device type for all affected devices, then click Update Devices and Remove Device Type. Only device types with zero devices assigned can be deleted directly. Reordering Device Type Groups Use the up and down arrows to the left of a group's name to change its position in the list. The first and last groups only show the arrow that applies to them. Device types within a group cannot be reordered independently of the group.
