Managing Zones

A zone is an area in a facility. A zone contains cages. A cage contains rows, and a row contains racks. On the page of a zone, you can edit the zone and add cages. On the page of a cage, you can add rows and racks.

Open a zone

1. Go to Devices > Facility Management.
2. In the row of the facility, click the number in Total Zones. The list of zones opens.
3. Click the name of the zone.

You can also open a zone from the page of its facility.

The View Zone page shows:

• Zone Information: the details and the status of the zone.
• Zone Custom Fields: the custom fields of the zone.
• Client List: the clients that occupy racks or cages in the zone.
• Location Summary: the number and the area of cages and racks for each status.
• Cages: the cages in the zone. Use filter to show only the cages with one status.

To edit the zone, click edit in Zone Information. Change the information, then click Save.

Add a cage

A cage can be one cage or a suite. A suite is a block of cages.

1. Open the zone.
2. In the Cages box, click add cage. The Add Cage window opens.
3. On the Details tab, type a Name, a Code, or both.
4. In Type, select Cage or Suite.
5. In Facility / Zone, make sure that the zone is correct.
6. In Status, select the status. See Statuses.
7. Type the AC Power Capacity (Amps) and the DC Power Capacity (Amps).
8. Type the Width and the Depth, and select the unit of each. Ubersmith calculates the Area. To type a different area, click override.
9. If the status is Customer Right of First Refusal or Customer Occupied, set the client on the Ownership Info tab. See Set the client of a location.
10. If you have custom cage fields, complete the Custom Fields tab.
11. Click Save. To add one more cage, click Save & New.

Add a row

You add rows to a cage.

1. Open the cage. To open a cage, click its name in the Cages box of the zone.
2. In the Rows / Racks box, click add row. The Add Row window opens.
3. Type a Name, a Code, or both.
4. In Facility / Zone and Cage, make sure that the location is correct.
5. In Status, select Available or Inactive.
6. If you have custom row fields, complete the Custom Fields tab.
7. Click Save. To add one more row, click Save & New.

Add a rack

You add racks to a row.

1. Open the cage.
2. In the Rows / Racks box, click add rack next to the row. The Add Rack window opens.
3. Type a Name, a Code, or both.
4. In Facility / Zone and Cage / Row, make sure that the location is correct.
5. In Type, select Standard Rack or Breadrack.
6. In Status, select the status. See Statuses.
7. Type the AC Power Capacity (Amps) and the DC Power Capacity (Amps).
8. Type the size of the rack:

• Standard Rack: type the Rack U, the height of the rack in rack units. The default is 42.
• Breadrack: type the number of Shelves, the number of Slots per shelf, and the Height.

1. Type the Width and the Depth. The defaults are 19 inches and 42 inches. Ubersmith calculates the Area. To type a different area, click override.
2. In Numbering Order, select how Ubersmith numbers the positions in the rack. For a standard rack, select top to bottom or bottom to top. For a breadrack, select the order of the shelves and slots.
3. If the status is Customer Right of First Refusal or Customer Occupied, set the client on the Ownership Info tab. See Set the client of a location.
4. If you have custom rack fields, complete the Custom Fields tab.
5. Click Save. To add one more rack, click Save & New.

View and edit cages, rows, and racks

The page of a cage shows the rows and racks of the cage in the Rows / Racks box.

• To edit a cage, click edit in Cage Information.
• To edit a row, click edit row next to the row.
• To edit a rack, click edit rack next to the rack.
• To open a rack, click the name of the rack. On the rack page, click View Rack to see the devices in the rack.

Change the information, then click Save.

Statuses

When you select a reserved or occupied status, type the Assigned Date. With Customer Right of First Refusal, also type the RoFR Expiration Date, the date when the right of the client stops.

If you select Customer Right of First Refusal or Customer Occupied, you must set a client on the Ownership Info tab. If a client is set, the status must be Internal Reserved, Internal Occupied, Customer Right of First Refusal, or Customer Occupied.

A location with the status Available gets the status of the location above it, if that status is not Available. For example, if a cage is Customer Occupied, its available racks are also Customer Occupied. The list shows "(Inherited)" after the status. You cannot change the client of a location that gets its status from a location above it. The Ownership Info tab does not show for that location.

Set the client of a location

1. Click the Ownership Info tab.
2. In Search, select the type of information to search, for example Client ID # or Client.
3. In For, type the value to search for.
4. Click Search.
5. In the search results, select the client.
6. Select the service of the client for the location.

Deactivate a zone, cage, or rack

You cannot delete a zone, cage, row, or rack. To stop using one, deactivate it.

1. Open the zone, cage, or rack.
2. Click deactivate in the information box. The Deactivate window opens.
3. Read the warning. When you deactivate a zone, Ubersmith also deactivates all of its cages and racks. When you deactivate a cage, Ubersmith also deactivates all of its racks.
4. Select the Yes, I want to make this … inactive check box.
5. Click Make Inactive.

To use an inactive location again, open it, click activate, select the check box, and click Make Active. The status changes to Available.

To deactivate a row, edit the row and set Status to Inactive.
