Creating IP Pools, Blocks, and Assignments Estimated Reading Time: 2 Minutes The current implementation of Ubersmith's IP management has the following hierarchy:IP Pools > IP Blocks > IP AssignmentsCreating IP PoolsIP pools are created in the IP & Networks section of Settings When you click 'Add New Address Pool', you will be presented with a popup that will allow you to create an IP pool. You can define the name of the pool, for example, 'ARIN Delegation' or 'RFC 1918' to identify the blocks that will be contained within the pool. If the IPs in this pool should only be used at a particular facility, you can specify the facility in the dropdown menu. These facilities are determined from the 'locations' you have configured in Settings. The 'Auto-assignment' option allows Ubersmith to provide the IPs contained in the pool as suggestions when you create new assignments. If this option is set to no, the system will ignore all blocks contained within the pool when suggesting new assignments.Creating IP BlocksOnce you have created an IP pool, you can begin to add blocks. Clicking on the pool name will bring you to the block listing for that pool. Clicking 'add block' will open a popup very similar to the 'Add New Address Pool' page, except in this case you will specify the IPs that should be contained within the block. The 'Network (CIDR)' field is expecting you to input the block of IPs in CIDR format. For example, if you were adding a block of RFC 1918 addresses, you might put: 192.168.0.0/24The priority field determines the order in which Ubersmith uses the IPs when an assignment is suggested. The lower the priority number, the more likely the system will use this block to suggest addresses. The 'Auto-assignment' option for blocks works similarly to the pool auto-assignment option. While pools and blocks allow you to specify a facility that those IPs should be used for, you do not have to do this. You can leave them configured with the 'All Facilities' option. Then the pools and blocks can be made available to every device or client in the system. Even if you don't plan to use Ubersmith's auto-assignment functionality, adding your IP delegations to the system is recommended, as the blocks in the system are used by Ubersmith's RWhois server to determine its authority area. Assigning IP AddressesOnce you have at least one pool and one block configured, you can start making assignments. From either the Devices & IPs section of the Client Manager, or from a device entry in Device Manager, you are provided with the opportunity to 'Add a New IP Assignment'. NoteIf you are assigning local IP addresses to devices without owners, Ubersmith will suggest these same assignments when you request a new assignment. If your assignments are global, Ubersmith does not suggest them.
