Implementation FAQs Estimated Reading Time: 3 Minutes This article answers common questions about installation, setup, and network requirements. The commands in this article apply to Ubersmith installations that use Docker, in the default directory /usr/local/ubersmith. For more information, refer to the article "Ubersmith and Docker". What does the error "This function is currently unavailable" mean? Ubersmith shows this message when a fatal PHP error occurs: This function is currently unavailable. We apologize that you are not able to access this feature at the present time. The message does not tell you the cause. To find the cause, look at the log of the php container: journalctl -t ubersmith/php --since "10 minutes ago" A common cause is a problem with the database. For example, the database server is not running, Ubersmith cannot connect to it, or the database is empty. Make sure that the db container is running: cd /usr/local/ubersmith docker compose -p ubersmith ps db What does the error "Database error saving attachment" mean? Ubersmith could not save an attachment, for example a file on a support ticket, in the database. The usual cause is that the MySQL setting max_allowed_packet is smaller than the attachment. The installer sets max_allowed_packet to 64M. To allow larger attachments, increase the value: Open /usr/local/ubersmith/conf/mysql/ubersmith.cnf. Change the line max_allowed_packet = 64M to a larger value, for example max_allowed_packet = 128M. Restart the db container: cd /usr/local/ubersmith docker compose -p ubersmith restart db Note: If you use an external database server, change max_allowed_packet in the MySQL configuration of that server. What does the error "couldn't connect to database" mean? The Ubersmith setup wizard shows this error on the Configure Database step when it cannot connect to MySQL with the information that you gave. The text after the error comes from MySQL and tells you more about the cause. Possible causes: MySQL is not running. The DB Host is not correct. In a standard Docker installation, the database host is db. You typed a socket path in Local UNIX Socket Path, but MySQL does not accept connections on that socket. The user name or the password is not correct. The user name and the password are correct, but MySQL did not load the new privileges. Run FLUSH PRIVILEGES; in MySQL. To test the connection, use the mysql command-line client, then try the setup again. Which ports must be open on the Ubersmith and appliance servers? Ubersmith instance host Inbound: Port Allow connections from Used for 22/tcp Your management network and the Ubersmith offices (see below) SSH access for administration and support 25/tcp All hosts Email to Ubersmith, for example ticket replies 80/tcp All hosts HTTP. Ubersmith redirects HTTP to HTTPS. 443/tcp All hosts HTTPS, for the admin and client interfaces 4321/tcp All hosts RWhois. Open this port only if you use RWhois. Outbound: allow connections to: Your infrastructure, for example your devices, switches, and payment gateways https://licensing.ubersmith.com, for license checks https://isa.ubersmith.com, for usage reporting to Ubersmith ghcr.io, to download the Ubersmith container images Ubersmith appliance host Inbound: Port Allow connections from Used for 22/tcp Your management network and the Ubersmith offices (see below) SSH access for administration and support 8080/tcp The Ubersmith instance host HTTP connections from Ubersmith 8443/tcp The Ubersmith instance host HTTPS connections from Ubersmith Outbound: allow connections to your infrastructure, for example the devices that the appliance monitors.
