Using VLAN Ranges Estimated Reading Time: 4 Minutes A VLAN range is a set of VLAN numbers that you can use in Ubersmith. When you add an IP group, you can select a VLAN range and a VLAN number for the group. Ubersmith makes sure that two IP groups do not use the same VLAN number in a range. View the VLAN ranges Go to Settings > Devices > VLAN Ranges. The page shows each VLAN range with its Range, Shared, Assignable, HSRP, and Type values. You can also see the VLAN ranges on the IP & VLAN Dashboard. Go to Devices > IP & VLAN. The VLAN Ranges box shows the number of available VLANs and the alert threshold of each range. In the VLAN Ranges box: Click the name of a range to see the IP groups that use it. Click empty VLANs to see the IP groups that have a VLAN number but no IP assignments on a device. IP groups with In Use set to YES do not show in this report. Click edit to edit the range, or add to add a range. Add a VLAN range Go to Settings > Devices > VLAN Ranges. Click Add VLAN Range. The Add VLAN Range window opens. On the Details tab, complete the fields. See the table below. On the Facilities tab, select the facilities where you use the VLAN range. Optional: On the Alerts tab, set the alerts. See Get alerts when a range is almost full. Click Save. To add one more range, click Save & New. Field Description Name The name of the VLAN range. Assignable Select it to show the range when you add or edit an IP group. If you do not select it, you cannot select the range for an IP group. HSRP Select it to turn on HSRP for all of the new IP groups in this range. You can change the HSRP setting for each IP group. See Reserve IPs for HSRP or VRRP. Range The VLAN numbers of the range. Type the first number in Start and the last number in Stop. Select Assignable to let IP groups use the numbers. To add one more set of numbers, click new range. To remove a set, click remove. Shared Shows whether devices or clients share the VLANs. This setting is for your information only. Type Private or Public. This setting is for your information only. Description Optional. A description of the range. A VLAN range can have more than one set of numbers. For example, you can use 100 to 199 and 300 to 399 in the same range. Clear Assignable for a set of numbers that IP groups must not use. To edit a VLAN range, click edit in the row of the range. To delete a range, click delete, then click Yes. Before you delete a VLAN range, make sure that no IP groups use it. Ubersmith does not remove the VLAN from the IP groups when you delete the range. Use a VLAN for an IP group Go to Devices > IP & VLAN, then click Add a New IP Group. You can also edit an IP group. In VLAN Range, select the range. The VLAN Number field shows. In VLAN Number, select the VLAN. The list shows only the numbers that no other IP group in the range uses. Optional: Select HSRP. See Reserve IPs for HSRP or VRRP. Complete the other fields, then click Save. Then add IP assignments to the IP group. You can assign IPs from the IP group to clients and devices. Reserve IPs for HSRP or VRRP If an IP group uses HSRP, Ubersmith reserves 2 IPs in each IP assignment of the group for the HSRP or VRRP routers. Ubersmith does not assign these 2 IPs to devices, the same as the gateway address and the broadcast address. Ubersmith reserves the HSRP IPs when you assign IPs to devices with the API methods device.ip_assign and device.ip_get_available. To select which IPs Ubersmith reserves: Go to Settings > Devices > General Settings. In the VRRP/HSRP section, in Reserve the 2 IPs, select one of these options: After the Gateway Address. This is the default. Below the Broadcast Address. Save the settings. Get alerts when a range is almost full On the Alerts tab of a VLAN range, complete these fields: Alert threshold: the minimum number of available VLANs. Alert email: the email address that gets the alert. Ubersmith counts the available VLANs when you save the range and each time the network usage task runs. If the number of available VLANs is less than the threshold, the status of the range is alert. Ubersmith sends one email to the alert email address. If the number is less than 1.5 times the threshold, the status of the range is warning. The status shows as a colored dot next to the range on the IP & VLAN Dashboard.
