Managing Payment Methods From the Client Portal Estimated Reading Time: 5 Minutes In the Client Portal, clients can keep their own payment methods on file. A payment method can be a credit card, a bank account, or a billing agreement. Ubersmith uses these payment methods to charge invoices automatically. The first part of this article is for clients. The last section, Settings for administrators, tells administrators how to control what clients can do. Open the Payment Methods page Log in to the Client Portal. Go to Client Profile > Payment Methods. The page shows a Credit Cards section and a Bank Accounts section. If your provider accepts billing agreements, the page also shows a Billing Agreements section. The Default column shows Yes for your default payment method. The links on this page depend on the settings of your provider. If you do not see a link, for example add credit card, contact your provider. Add a credit card In the Credit Cards section, click add credit card. The Add Credit Card popup opens. Type the Card Number, the Expiration Date (MMYY), and the CVV2 Code. Type an Issue Number only if your card has one. Make sure that the name and the billing address are correct. Ubersmith fills them in from your profile. To use this card for all charges, select Default Payment Method. Select the authorization check box. You must select this check box to save the card. Click Save. Your card's bank can ask you to confirm the card (3-D Secure). If a confirmation window opens, follow the instructions in it. Note: The Add Credit Card popup can look different. Its fields depend on the payment gateway of your provider. Add a bank account In the Bank Accounts section, click add bank account. The Add Bank Account popup opens. Type the Account Number and the ABA Routing Number. Select the Account Type: Checking or Savings. Type the Bank Name. Make sure that the name and the billing address are correct. To use this bank account for all charges, select Default Payment Method. Select the authorization check box. You must select this check box to save the bank account. Click Save. Add a billing agreement A billing agreement lets a payment service, for example PayPal, charge your account. This section shows only if your provider accepts billing agreements. In the Billing Agreements section, click the add link for the payment service, for example add PayPal billing agreement. Ubersmith opens the website of the payment service. Log in there and approve the agreement. After you approve it, the agreement shows in the list. If an agreement shows as waiting for approval, click approve to finish it. You can have only one agreement that is waiting for approval at a time. View, edit, or delete a payment method To see the details of a payment method, click view. To change a credit card or a bank account, click edit. Make the changes, select the authorization check box again, and click Update. You cannot edit a billing agreement. To remove a payment method, click delete. Then click Yes to confirm. {% callout type="warning" %} When you delete a payment method, the services that Ubersmith charges to it change to your default payment method. {% /callout %} Change the default payment method Ubersmith uses your default payment method when no other payment method is selected for a charge. Credit card or bank account: Click edit. Select Default Payment Method, select the authorization check box, and click Update. Billing agreement: Click set as default, then click Yes to confirm. This link shows only for an active agreement that is not the default. Choose the payment method for a service You can authorize Ubersmith to charge a service to a specific payment method. Go to Billing & Services > View Services. On the row of the service, click Authorize Auto-Charge. The Authorize Auto-Charge popup opens. In Payment Method, select the type: Credit Card, Bank Account, or Billing Agreement. Select the payment method. Read the authorization text. Then click Authorize. If you have no payment methods on file, the popup tells you to contact your provider. Settings for administrators Two settings control what a client can do on the Payment Methods page: the Client Interface settings and the permissions of the contact. Client Interface settings Go to Settings > Global Settings > Client Interface > Global Settings. These questions turn each action on or off for all clients: Credit Card Settings: Can clients add credit cards online?, Can clients update credit card info online?, Can clients delete credit card info online? Bank Account Settings: Can clients add bank account info online?, Can clients update bank account info online?, Can clients delete bank account info online? Billing Agreement Settings: Can clients create billing agreements online?, Can clients update billing agreements online?, Can clients delete billing agreements online? For more information, refer to the article "Configuring Client Interface Global Settings". Contact permissions The Payment Methods permission of each contact has the actions View, Create, Update, and Delete. For more information, refer to the article "Client, Contact, and Leads Permission Details". How the settings work together A client can do an action only if both settings allow it. For example, the add credit card link shows only if: the Client Interface settings allow clients to add credit cards, the contact has the Create permission, and a credit card gateway is set on the Payment Processing Options page. If a credit card is hard declined too many times, Ubersmith stops charging it. The client sees a message on the Payment Methods page.
